![]() ![]() Both Runabout models are limited editions of 888 pieces. The rose gold-plated Runabout is fitted with a navy blue strap with off-white topstitching the stainless steel with a blue-grey leather strap with light blue topstitching. The sapphire crystal is oriented with the Riva Historical Society logo. It also has hacking seconds for precision time-setting and a quick date function. Fitted with an Incablock anti-shock device, the movement beats at 28,800vph and delivers a power reserve of 38 hours. The Runabouts are powered by the FC-303 automatic, a Sellita-based SW200-1 with a personalised rotor. A peripheral minute track with five-minute markings and a date window at 6 o’clock with a white background complete the package. Sword-style hour and minute hands are enhanced with lume and the central seconds hand is rose-gold plated for the plated case and bright blue for the stainless steel version. Large Art Deco-style Arabic numerals are applied at 12, 2, 4, 8 and 10 to the chapter ring with hour markers filled with luminescent material. ![]() Moving from transport vessels to motorboats in the 1920s and 1930s, by the 1950s, Carlo Riva (1922-2017) turned the brand into a nautical legend with a series of handcrafted wood-based designs with inimitable Italian style. At the top end of runabouts are the Rivas, beautiful Italian-designed wooden speedboats emanating from the Riva shipyard, which was founded in 1842 on the shores of Lake Iseo in Italy by Pietro Riva. Runabouts are small powerboats with an outboard engine suitable for water sports, cruising and fishing. To celebrate Riva Days 2022, the watch brand is releasing two limited editions of its stylish 42mm Runabout Automatic in rose gold-plated or stainless steel cases. The Riva Historical Society (RHS) and Frederique Constant have been partners since 2013. Similar to the Concorso d’Eleganza held in Villa d’Este for historical cars, Riva boats paraded past judges at Geneva’s Société Nautique to the delight of spectators and owners alike. With their sleek lines and styling, Riva runabouts capture a dolce vita image of celebrities and jet setters speeding across Italy’s majestic lakes. Organised by the Riva Historical Society (RHS), Riva runabouts are the legendary Italian wooden boats built on the shores of Lake Iseo. Bold white stitching runs across both sides and maintains a maritime vibe.A beautiful sight awaited lovers of Riva runabout yachts as they docked at Geneva’s Société Nautique for the international Riva Days 2022 event taking place from 7-11 July. The navy-blue calf leather straps have an alligator print and complement the blue dials. The exhibition case back itself is engraved with the Riva Historical Society flag, outlined in black. Being a mass-produced movement as opposed to one manufactured in-house diminishes the prestige factor a bit, but also provides an excellent value for a piece with near-identical specifications. The movement has 26 jewels, a 38-hour power reserve, beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour with hours, minutes, seconds and date functions. Frederique Constant is already known for its competitive pricing and these models should help reinforce that. Unlike the Frederique Constant Classic Manufacture, for example, with an in-house calibre FC-710, the new automatic Runabouts are powered by a FC-303 calibre, which is a modified Sellita SW200-1 (other versions of the calibre are an almost identical ETA 2824). This movement plays a vital role in allowing both watches to remain very approachable. ![]() All hands, indexes and numerals are filled with lume, and the dial is protected by a convex sapphire crystal.Ī sapphire crystal case back displays the FC-303 automatic calibre. The included hour markers are 12, 2, 4, 8 and 10. The hands are plated in rose gold on the gold model and are silver on the steel, and the indexes and Arabic numerals are also matched to their corresponding model. That date window lives at 6 o’clock and the minutes are displayed around the dial’s outer rim. A subtle wave pattern sits above the Frederique Constant name at the top and AUTOMATIC printed just above the date window. The navy-blue dial has a hobnail pattern that’s classic to the brand and a central guilloché gives it additional complexity. Frederique Constant pays homage to that by first polishing the 42mm cases to match the boats’ glossy finish. Vintage Riva boats were like fine pieces of wooden furniture with varnished mahogany and an extreme attention to detail. ![]()
